THE DES MOINES PUBLIC SCHOOLS AMERICORPS PROGRAM

The Des Moines Public Schools AmeriCorps Program is an exciting, new collaboration between the school district, governor and Mayor’s offices, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa, Community!  Youth Concepts, United Way of Central Iowa, and the community foundation of Greater Des Moines.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MENTORING – PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS

Pathways to success will use one-to-one and small group mentoring relationships to introduce students to career and educational opportunities.  Mentors will meet their students regularly at their schools to build their relationship and help prepare them for, or reflect upon, their trips to their place of business.  Throughout the school year, mentors and students will visit your company 3 times to expose the sixth graders to career opportunities within a real working environment.  The Pathways to Success program coordinators have developed agendas and curriculum for each meeting with the mentors.  This exploration of various types of careers will stress the importance of school and provide students with supportive adults that model the most successful paths that students can connect to their own interests and dreams.
